'Shorty' is my grandfather. He passed away two years ago at the age of 90 while vacationing in Scotland. He led a very interesting life. He was born in Hamilton in 1906. At the age of 19, he was declared a hero and given a Governor General's Award for rescuing a drowning boy who had fallen into the Hamilton Harbour. He participated in the 1932 and 1936 Olympic Games, and brought home a bronze metal for rowing in 1932. In 1942, he set off for Britain, where he diffused bombs throughout WWII. Returning from war, he went back to his job as an accountant for Ontario Hydro. His love of rowing remained strong as he served as the head coach at the Leander Boat Club. In his busy life he also managed to have time to get married and have a daughter. He participated in the following Olympic Games:
Olympic Year | Place | Awards |
---|---|---|
1932 | Los Angeles | Bronze |
